George Clooney and Sandra Bullock-starring space thriller Gravity has rocketed to the top of the US box office in its opening weekend, breaking a record in the process.

The film took $55.5 million over the weekend, which represents the best ever October opening in the US.

Gravity follows two astronauts battle for survival after their shuttle is damaged during a mission and has received widespread praise since it debuted.

The thriller knocked off last weekend’s No.1 Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which took another $21.5m bringing its total earnings up to $60.5m.

Prisoners, another former No.1 slipped from two to five meanwhile, while the late James Gandolfini and Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Enough Said crept into the top 10 in tenth place.

There were two new entries – Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake crime thriller Runner Runner, which entered in third place, and comedy Pulling Strings at No. 9.
