KABUL: Afghan senate has expressed serious concerns on Sunday over digging of a 480 kilometer long trench by Pakistani security forces along the de facto Durand Line which is against the international laws as per claims of the legislators.
Upper House of the parliament, also called Meshrano Jirga, asked the government to prevent Pakistani paramilitary troops from digging of the trench. The senators decided to summon security officials to share their findings with the legislators in this regard. The senators asked Islamabad to put immediate halt to the digging.
Abdul Baqi Baryal, a senator from Ghazni, termed digging of the trench against international laws and said the digging must be stopped as the Durand Line is a de factor border and has no international recognition.
He said that Durand Line was imposed on Afghans living on both sides of the line.
While asking the government to take notice of the issue, Belqis Roshan, a senator from Farah, said that if Pakistan was not stopped then Islamabad would continue to occupy more Afghan lands.
Faredah Kochi, a senator from Balkh, said if the government does not stop Pakistan then Afghan women would come forward to take steps in this regard. “I will be the first to come forward to defend the country.”
Chairman of the senate Fazul Hadi Muslimyar said that Afghans would not tolerate such moves of Pakistan on both sides of the Durand Line. He said the Afghan security officials have been summoned to appear on Tuesday in the senate to explain what measures they are taking in this regard.
According to media reports, Pakistani paramilitary forces (Frontier Corps) are digging trenches in a number of areas in Balochistan near Helmand, Kandahar and Paktika provinces.
Meanwhile President Hamid Karzai has appointed a delegation to assess the issue and present its report to the President Office within next 10 days.
